Who am I?

Oh hi! I’m Melissa - a self-taught home cook who has lived the bulk of my life in the Deep North (upper midwest). I think about food and people a lot. I love to thrift, crochet, pretty much live in athleisure, and have been described as the queen of hosting.

Why am I writing a newsletter?

I’ve cooked and eaten in a flyover state for most of my life, and there is great food here! There is a refinement in flavor and skilled technique to be learned from the tough people living in the prairies and woods, and on the banks of the lakes in the Deep North. This newsletter is a place to celebrate the food of this region, the meals that sustain me, and as a way for me to share my thoughts re: food.

What you can expect

A semi-regular (weekly? monthly?) newsletter with my musings with a recipe or interviews with my friends or recommendations of things I like. I imagine this will evolve over time just like we all do. I won’t ever talk about dieting or calories or anyone’s body size. I believe that eating and preparing food are often about more than the material nourishment in front of us. It is deeper than the flavor or the process to prepare a meal, and I can’t wait to explore that together.
